short bio

Dismantlists is the performance moniker of Minneapolis musician Steve Seel.

Wait, I thought this guy was a DJ.

Yes, he is also a longtime public radio host, currently working at Classical Minnesota Public Radio.

Does he release any music under his own name?

No, that's another guy.

So what about his radio stuff? Is that worth investigating at all?

Why yes. There are two nationally syndicated shows in particular you might like: Extra Eclectic, which is about contemporary classical music, and Symphony Cast. There's also this, which was a lot of fun, and this was pretty cool too.

Dismantlists is the performance moniker of Minneapolis-based musician Steve Seel, who creates subtly textured, layered guitar loops that are alternately minimalist and complex - but always immersive and dramatic.

This may be electric guitar, but it's not always apparent as such - and Seel says he enjoys challenging himself to invent the sound of  "unidentifiable instruments" whenever possible. Compositions range from simple lines to dense musical fractals or Möbius-strips, twisting around in evocative ways, using looping pedals, recording, or both. Note sequences often recur at different intervals, creating phasing effects that produce serendipitous combinations. Cinema seems a regular sonic reference point, conjuring the noir-ish atmosphere of rainy pavement and neon. But the glimmer of natural light is never far away.

A three-decade veteran of public radio, including the nationally-syndicated program Extra Eclectic, Seel has been playing with sound since his youth, when his favorite childhood toys where his various tape recorders. A home life steeped in classical music provided his earliest education, but he says his favorite "piece" in any classical concert as a kid was "when the orchestra tuned at the beginning - and that never lasted long enough." A lifetime of interest in all things musically minimalist ensued.

Seel's radio career has found him originating both the avant-garde showcase Present Tense at WNED-FM in Buffalo, NY, and Extra Eclectic at Minnesota Public Radio, where his affinity for the more austere side of contemporary classical music emerged as a regular focus. His own musical endeavors were finally showcased with his proper debut as Dismantlists, Here at the End, in 2018, and continued with 2020's Pilgrims and 2026's Evidence.

on dismantlists:

"Dismantlists began as a liberation - from singing. I had been attempting to write and perform traditional songs since my mid-20s, but in 2003, I abruptly aborted all my singing and songwriting because the process was not proving salutary to my overall mental health, shall we say. One day a friend suggested, 'why don't you try taking your voice out of it and see what happens,' so I recorded a simple instrumental and I realized that it was a language I had always 'thought in' anyway. The name Dismantlists is really just a pretentious play on the idea of 'removing unnecessary stuff,' and pluralized just to be cheeky. The music itself is almost entirely guitar, even when it doesn't sound like it - which is something I enjoy."
